“Adventure tourism” is defined as a tourism pattern that covers at least two of the three elements, physical activity, enjoyment of the environment, and local cultural experience such as activities (walking, walking with overnight stays, valleys, caves, cycling, climbing mountains, rock climbing, etc.).
This is what makes Jordan a sure destination on any adventure traveler’s bucket list.

So what to do in Jordan ?

Climb the rocky steps to the monastery in Petra

The famous city of Petra is a major attraction in Jordan, as the ancient Nabataean city dates back to around 300 BC. Visitors reach it by walking through a narrow valley between rocky cliffs known as the “Siq”.
The Siq ends with an amazing scene of a huge structure carved into the rock in a wonderful artistic way called “The Treasury”, which was named so because it was believed to contain hidden treasures.
Equally astonishing is the sight of the nearby monastery, and although this site is treasury-like in appearance, it is much larger, and can only be reached by ascending nearly 850 steps, which were shaped directly into the rock thousands of years ago. Climbing the steps can be a challenge in the hot sun, but it is worth it because of the stunning views you reach and the surrounding area. Make sure you drink enough water while climbing the steps and stop on your way to catch your breath and contemplate the view, this experience you will not forget.

Karak Valley:

If you are a fan of adventure, and live the experience of mountain descents, then you should head to Wadi Karak, especially in the summer.

The Karak Valley is located between the Karak Governorate and the Dead Sea. It is 125 km away from the capital, Amman, and 21 km in length.
There are five mountain descents in the Karak Valley, ranging in length from 7 to 30 meters.

The valley is characterized by its terrain and slopes, as well as the presence of trees, plants and wildflowers wrapped in the rocks of the valley.

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is also called the “Valley of the Moon”, due to the wonderful nature of the desert resembling the topography of the moon, and the red color is caused by iron oxide present in most of the rocks around the valley. The famous 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia was partly filmed in Wadi Rum, and more recently, Al-Muraikhi’s film “The Martian” was shot in the area.

There are several ways to explore the wonderful landscapes of Wadi Rum, including desert safari excursions in four-wheel drive cars, over the sand dunes, or balloon trips over its towering mountains, and there are many permanent camps for the nomads who inhabit the desert and the surrounding villages.
meteor showers

There is a specific time of the year when you might want to visit Wadi Rum if you are interested in meteors, the Perseids usually occur between July and August, and peak around mid-August, and the Perseids is an amazing celestial show that has been happening for nearly 2,000 years . Although it can be seen across much of the Northern Hemisphere, there are few better places to view a meteor shower than in the Wadi Rum desert, where there is no light pollution, the skies are clear, and the show appears most clearly in a breathtaking spectacle.

Umm Qais archaeological tunnel

The Umm Qais Tunnel, or what is known as the Decapolis Tunnel, is an underground water miracle built by the Romans to connect the cities of the Decapolis waterways to each other. The tunnel extends 170 kilometers between Jordan and Syria, and it is 9 times longer than the second longest tunnel in the world, which is located in Italy. It is an underground water empire.
And as soon as the tunnel was opened for tourist visits, about 150,000 tourists who loved adventure tourism and exploration flocked to visit the longest tunnel in the world in 2019.

The important thing here is to always make sure to balance yourself, so as not to fall when walking between bumpy roads and flat roads, especially since the view of the nature surrounding you will steal your heart before your sight.
Take with you the supplies for the descent (ropes, a helmet, and if there is swimming, a life jacket must be worn), and of course, listen carefully to the instructions for the descent that will be recited to you in order to get a smooth and exciting descent at the same time.
There you will have the strangest feeling you can live, as you start descending with clothes completely wet with water, but as soon as you reach the next stop on your journey, the traces of water will disappear from your clothes, due to the high temperatures, which creates a high balance in your body temperature.

Ragab Valley:

But if you are a fan of cold water spilling from the top of the mountains, you should visit Wadi Rajeb.

Wadi Rajeb is located in Ajloun Governorate, north of Jordan, 75 km from the capital.

The valley is characterized by the presence of water along the way, and at the end of the path there is a waterfall and a very cold-water pool. At the beginning of the path, and at its end, you can rest by the running water, as there are several breaks.

There are several sessions inside the running water in Wadi Rajeb, which families can enjoy. As for the rest of the path, it takes effort to reach its end.
the cedar forests

There is nothing similar to the cedar forests located in the high mountains of Lebanon, except for the cedar forest located in the Jordanian city of Jerash, which is located in the north of Jordan, and is approximately 65 km away from Amman, the capital, and the length of the path is approximately 10 km.

The Cedar Forest is the first forest found in that region, because it is tall and rainy, and the cedar trees need large amounts of water. It is an extension of Dibeen forests, intertwined with several pine and oak forests, overlooking the Salt Mountains and King Talal Dam.

One of the most beautiful sights there is that you can enjoy riding the clouds, as they are near you, or as far as your eye can see, as you move through the forest. The height of the trees and the forest makes you vulnerable to the warm rays of the sun located in the high mountains of Lebanon, except for the cedar forest located in the Jordanian city of Jerash, which is in the north of Jordan, and is approximately 65 km away from Amman, the capital, and the length of the path is approximately 10 km.

Zubia Forest

As for lovers of a quiet adventure, we chose the Zubia forests for you, as they do not need ropes and climbing, but only hands, to keep the tangled trees away from your path, and to make sure that the dropping branches do not hit your head while walking.

The forest is about 84 km from Amman to the north of the Kingdom, and it is a good opportunity for all ages to explore types of plants and insects, and try to catch some of them, if you are a fan of them, or photograph them to learn their details later.
